Over 250 cyclists from across the country participated in the 2014 tour de Dwangwa 85-kilometre race on Sunday.

The annual race, which attracted more than 2 000 spectators, was organised by a charitable organisation called Roundtable Dwangwa 69. It was aimed at raising funds to assist in community charitable projects.

The race comprised professional and non-professional cyclists from various age groups.

Number one winner in the men was 25-year-old Miss Kathumba, who represented Malawi at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Kathumba belongs to Blantyre Echo Cycling Club.

“I am happy to be among the first winners of the competition,” said Kathumba.

Samson Zimba, the organising committee chairperson, said the organisation incorporated cycling as it is a famous sport among people living in Dwangwa.

“I would like to thank those who have assisted the event. I can assure them that their support is going to change lives of people who are in dire need of help,” he said.

The money generated in the previous event was used to construct a storeroom, buy water pump, a computrer and generator for health centres in Dwangwa.
